The family is far different from that of the past. It is rare to find a traditional family with a stay at home mom. Today, many children grow up in a single parent environment, with mothers who work most of the time to support them. Many children will also grow up without a father figure. In the article† Absent Fathers: Why Don’t We Ever Talk about the Unmarried Man?† Rebecca Blank states, â€Å"For every single mother, there is a father who is not living with his children. It seems that people have forgotten the importance of a father figure in a child’s life. In â€Å"Promoting Marriage as a Means for Promoting Fatherhood,† Wade F. Horn states that children living in a father-absent home are also more likely to be suspended or expelled from†¦show more content†¦In â€Å"The Changing American Family,† it states that families are being transformed and redefined by forces such as single parenting, divorce, maternal employment, delaye d childbearing, adult independent living, and homosexual parenting (P. 454). Consequently, these things are affecting our children and their futures. However, I do not believe that all children are negatively affected by these changes. If you take the time to teach children important values, nurture them, and understand the importance of both a father and a mother, they can turn out to be healthy adults. It seems many people are cohabitating in the United States. In the article â€Å"Cohabitation Instead of Marriage,† James Wilson explains how this creates a problem for couples. Wilson states â€Å"If people are free to leave cohabitation, then in many cases, neither the man nor the woman has any strong incentive to invest heavily in the union (Par.2). Have we come to value our personal freedom more than our marriages, or could it be that we are scared of being hurt? Like Wilson states in his article, â€Å"If we cohabitate and I stop loving you, I walk away† (Par. 7 ). This sounds a lot easier than divorce. This is also teaching our children that when times get tough, it is okay to bail out, instead of work it out. Maybe the government is partially to blame for the rise in cohabitation and divorce.
